Habari!! Habari means hello in Swahili.
We are: Marianna Konstanta and Christina Takka and this year we have decided to combine our love for travelling and new adventures with volunteerism.
On the 13-23 December 2018 we will be visiting together with around 25 more volunteers from Greece and Cyprus, Tanzania and more specifically Gongo village to build a Maisha pads production center.
This construction will significantly improve the everyday life of girls and women in the village! In this way, even more girls will go to school and more women will be empowered and take their life in their own hands without being ashamed.
Needs & Challenges
For women and teenagers in Tanzania, menstruation is a huge obstacle to their participation in everyday life from a simple physiological experience. Without access to reliable products for the period, these women suffer in school or their work. This "traumatic" experience often keeps girls out of school and women out of work as it creates a sense of shame. Appropriate products and educating girls about what to expect and how to manage their period is the key to staying at school and a catalyst for empowering women in the community as it offers an alternative source of income.
The project
In 2017, in cooperation with the local community, SANA launched the Maisha Pads, a project that included a group of 30 women from Gongo. The aim of the project was to improve menstrual hygiene by creating reusable female sanitary towels for communities around the Saadani National Park. The project also offers a source of income for women as they will distribute the products to other communities and hence will be able to support their families more.
Be the change you want to see in the world!!
